Russian star fumes at personal Kyrgios attack

Nick Kyrgios' spat with Mats Wilander has led to friction between the Canberran and another men's tennis star, Karen Khachanov.

This week Kyrgios took aim at Wilander to defend his friend Andy Murray, after the seven-time major winner criticised the Scotsman following his heavy first-round French Open defeat to Stan Wawrinka.

The 6-1 6-3 6-2 loss equalled Murray's worst from 237 grand slam matches. As he attempts his comeback from hip surgery, Wilander said Murray was selfish for taking the wildcard entry to Roland Garros.

But after an impassioned defence of Murray on Twitter, Kyrgios attracted criticism of his own from world No.16, Khachanov.

Earlier this year Kyrgios beat Khachanov in one of the best matches of the Australian Open, overcoming the Russian star in five tough sets, 6-2 7-6 6-7 6-7 7-6 to advance to the fourth round, where he lost an absorbing clash with Rafael Nadal.

"Nick, come on mate," Khachanov tweeted in reply to Kyrgios' dig at Wilander.

"It's too much... show some respect."

Nick Kyrgios of Australia

The Aussie did not back down.

"Nah I'm good dude. Muzz and I respect each other, and if someone starts talking about one of mine then I'll come at them. I'm supposed to respect Mats? For what? Hitting a ball over the net? I don't give my respect for that," Kyrgios tweeted back.

"Bro it's your call," Khachanov replied. "I really think you are a good lad and I don't have any problem with you. But once you are sitting at home and writing different comments about players that makes me think who has the real problem."

https://twitter.com/karenkhachanov/status/1310588774880026625?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfwhttps://twitter.com/karenkhachanov/status/1310863186036432901?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

Then the argument between the pair got a bit more personal.

"So you think what the players did during this pandemic was smart?" Kyrgios tweeted.

"I'd love to have an intellectual conversation with you but I'm not sure it would go further than how hard you could hit a ball. I've simply been holding people accountable."

The Russian quickly fired back.

"Next time before talking about my intellect read at least a few books, instead or playing video games [the] whole day long," Khachanov said.

https://twitter.com/karenkhachanov/status/1311244312936624129?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

Kyrgios defended himself by pointing to the work he has done in the ACT during his time off from the tour, including providing tennis racquets to Canberra kids as part of a tennis program at schools there.

"I've also been feeding the hungry, helping open up new facilities for kids to get active. But way to do your research you absolute pelican," Kyrgios told Khachanov.

https://twitter.com/NickKyrgios/status/1311249302400847872https://twitter.com/NickKyrgios/status/1311248013914898433

Wilander is not the only tennis legend Kyrgios has butted heads with in the last year.

Boris Becker and Kyrgios have an ongoing beef that began when the German tennis legend called the Aussie a "rat" for criticising the antics of Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic after the doomed Adria Tour which prematurely ended after a coronavirus outbreak.

Kyrgios' outspoken stance against tennis players' behaviour during the pandemic also earned him the ire of fellow tour player Borna Coric.

This past week Becker and Kyrgios again clashed when Becker took aim at an Instagram post by Kyrgios.

"He's gone from wanting to coach me, obviously for his desperate need of a pay check [sic], to hating on my Instagram. Strange world we live in," Kyrgios responded.

Roosters put target on Panthers star's head

He's been one of the big success stories of the season for Penrith, but the Roosters have identified Jarome Luai as the potential weak link in Friday night's big opening finals clash.

Daring and creative with the ball, Luai was a major factor in the Panthers' charge to the minor premiership.

But the Roosters have broken down Luai's game and found that his defence may be wanting - and will run their big men at him all night.

At just 184cm and 88kg, Luai will be one of the smallest men on the field in the crucial game.

The youngster is brave, happy to put his body on the line, but the Roosters believe he will struggle tackling their giant edge forwards, particularly close to the tryline.

Luai made 14 tackles in the Panthers' big win over the Bulldogs last weekend, but missed three.

In attack, he was close to man of the match, setting up three tries and looking dangerous every time he had the ball.

The teams haven't met since the opening round of the season, way back on March 14, when the Panthers won 20-14 at home.

Again, Luai looked sharp but missed four tackles.

"He's a livewire kid and great with the ball, but we plan to test him in defence, for sure," a Roosters source told Wide World of Sports.

Write-off Robbo's champion Roosters at your peril

Mark Levy is the host of 2GB's Wide World of Sports radio show. Tune in from 6pm-7pm, Monday to Thursday!

It was only 12 months ago that the rugby league fraternity was questioning if the Roosters could make it back-to-back premierships for the first time in a unified competition since the Brisbane Broncos in 1992-93.

The Chooks ignored the doubters and went on to lift the Provan-Summons Trophy.

Fast forward to today and the same sceptics are pointing to the fact no team has ever won the grand final after conceding 50 points - but we're talking about a football side that's continually silenced its critics and the Roosters will probably do it again in 2020.

I've never been a fan of the Bondi club and I often find myself poking fun at the 'salary cap sombrero', the 'latte sippers' and the 'supporters who refuse to turn up to the games'.

However, there's still a mutual respect for what they've been able to achieve.

Catch up on the latest Wide World of Sports radio episode in the podcast below!

https://omny.fm/shows/wide-world-of-sports/wide-world-of-sports-full-show-september-29/embed

Growing up as a South Sydney supporter, I was always taught to hate the Roosters, yet I maintain the current group of players make the Chooks one of the best teams I've seen in the modern era. Their record speaks for itself and it's hard to ignore.

I'm sure there are plenty of Rabbitohs supporters hanging on to last week's 60-8 drubbing of the Roosters a week out from the finals series, but who's going to remember that if the reigning premiers bounce back and go on to win the comp again?

It's much like the Penrith Panthers, who have claimed their third minor premiership. The mountain men were presented with the JJ Giltinan Shield on the weekend, but can you name the last 10 teams to finish on top after the regular season?

There is only one prize that matters in the NRL and that's the Telstra Premiership on grand final day. The winning team is handed the trophy featuring that iconic embrace between Norm Provan and Arthur Summons - that's what teams and players are remembered for.

Yeah, it's a great achievement finishing on top of the ladder and it's a concern when you're beaten by 52 points leading into the finals, but we're entering the business end of the season and the form goes out the window.

Steve 'Blocker' Roach always used to say on 2GB's Continuous Call Team, "Beware the bounce-back factor", and that's been ringing in my ears ever since the Roosters were thumped by South Sydney.

The Chooks have got a trip out to Penrith in the opening week of the finals and they're up against the Panthers, who have won 15 consecutive matches and boast the best winning record since the St George Dragons in 1959.

Will it be the Panthers or the peak-hour traffic that proves the biggest hurdle?

Jake Friend is being monitored after a head clash last weekend and they welcome back Brett Morris, Joseph Manu, Isaac Liu and Lindsay Collins, who were given a rest by Trent Robinson.

Surely the coach has a trick up his sleeve just like 2018, when they played ducks-and-drakes with the media before Cooper Cronk won them a grand final with a broken shoulder.

Never underestimate a modern-day genius like 'Robbo', who we're already talking about in the same breath as Wayne Bennett, Jack Gibson and Craig Bellamy.

The other statistic that some people are forgetting is that you've got to finish in the top-four to win the comp and the Roosters have earned themselves that all-important second chance - the question remains though, will they need it?

I think we're in for one hell of a ride over the next month and well done to the NRL for reducing the price of the tickets, as a thank you to the supporters in what's been an interrupted season for professional sports like rugby league.

If you cast your mind back to the ill-fated day when ARL Commission chairman Peter V'landys announced the competition was being suspended because of COVID-19, who would have thought we'd make it through a challenging year and be gearing up for another finals series?

LEVY'S WEEK-ONE FINALS TIPS: Penrith, Canberra, Melbourne, South Sydney.

I look forward to your company over the weekend on the Continuous Call Team and tune into Wide World of Sports radio from 6pm Monday-Thursday on 2GB 873am in Sydney and 4BC 1116am in Brisbane.

**Can the Roosters win the comp and who's your pick for the premiership in 2020? Let me know what you think by emailing the Wide World of Sports radio show here

Rugby Australia, NZR relationship at 'lowest ebb'

The 'messy' dispute between Rugby Australia and New Zealand Rugby over The Rugby Championship scheduling has left their relationship at its "lowest ebb" according to Rugby Australia chairman Hamish McLennan.

The revelations come as New Zealand officials lobby for a schedule change to the current format.

Speaking on NZ rugby show The Breakdown, McLennan disputed claims made by by NZ Rugby it never agreed to a six-week format for the tournament. Under the current agreement the All Blacks would potentially having to spend Christmas Day in quarantine, rather than with their families.

"On numerous occasions, for the record, going back to August 27, we at RA said we would be prepared to entertain a five-week competition but that was knocked on the head by New Zealand, South Africa and Argentina," McLennan said.

Hamish McLennan. (AAP)

Australia voted with New Zealand to play six matches in five weeks at a September 17 meeting but rivals South Africa and Argentina knocked it back, leaving the trans-Tasman nations with little choice but to fold to the competition format.

McLennan said he has board minutes that prove NZR agreed to a six-week tournament despite their claims.

"I've seen board minutes from September 17 where the six-week competition was signed off," McLennan said.

"There's a lot of he said, she said. It's a bit messy, I have to say.

"There is respect there but the relationship is at probably the lowest ebb it's ever been at," McLennan said.

"But I'm trying my hardest to fix that over time."

If changes are to be implemented to the schedule, South Africa and Argentina would have to co-sign, while moving either the third or fourth Bledisloe Cup Test is another option.

If all four countries can't get on the same page, the All Blacks have not ruled out walking away from the December 12 Bledisloe clash at ANZ Stadium.

"I'd be really concerned about a boycott. I think it would be a tragedy for the TRC and the game," McLennan said.

"It's 10 weeks away. The restrictions are unwinding a little bit here. The NSW government has done a great job with contact tracing and we've had two days in a row where we've had no new cases.

"I think we all just need to take a deep breath and stand back a little bit."

The Wallabies will face the All Blacks in New Zealand on October 11 and 18 before returning to Australia to prepare for The Rugby Championship.

Premier League : Liverpool beat Arsenal 3-1, new signing Diogo Jota scores debut goal

The Gunners, who had won their opening two league games, went ahead after 25 minutes when Alexandre Lacazette took advantage of Andrew Robertson’s error to bundle a close-range finish past Alisson but ended well beaten.

Liverpool, who maintained their 100% start to the season and moved second behind Leicester City, responded instantly as man-of-the-match Sadio Mane pounced two minutes later after Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno could only push out Mohamed Salah’s shot.

And Liverpool went ahead before half-time when Robertson atoned for his earlier error by getting on the end of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross to beat Leno.

Liverpool were far superior but Arsenal will rue a great chance missed by Lacazette, who shot tamely at Alisson when he was clean through with the score 2-1 and their night was complete when Jota, making his Anfield bow following his move from Wolves, shot low past Leno from the edge of the area.

French Open Highlights : Serena, Nadal cruise to 2nd round, 4th seed Medvedev ousted

Serena Williams began her quest for a 24th Grand Slam singles title with a hard-fought win over Kristie Ahn in the French Open first round.

Sixth seed Williams, who turned 39 on Saturday, overcame a rusty start to beat her fellow American 7-6 (7-3) 6-0.

Once she came through a 74-minute opener, Williams began to play with more belief and clarity as she swept Ahn aside in a 27-minute second set.

Williams will play Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova in the second round in Paris.

Pironkova, 33, was handed a wildcard by Roland Garros organisers after a memorable run to the US Open quarter-finals – where she lost to Williams – in her first tournament since 2017 after giving birth.

Pironkova set up the rematch with a 6-3 6-3 win over Germany’s Andrea Petkovic.

French Open Day 2 Results : Nadal, Thiem cruise to 2nd round

Spain’s 12-time champion Rafael Nadal encountered few problems as he started the French Open with a three-set win over Belarusian Egor Gerasimov.

Nadal, 34, wrapped up a 6-4 6-4 6-2 victory in two hours five minutes against the world number 83, who was making his main-draw debut in Paris.

US Open champion Dominic Thiem also moved into the second round with a 6-4 6-3 6-3 win over Croatia’s Marin Cilic.

French Open Day 2 Results : 4th seeded Medvedev & Kreber ousted in first round

Daniil Medvedev is now 0-4 for his career at the French Open. The runner-up at the U.S. Open last year and a semifinalist in New York this month failed yet again to win a match at Roland Garros.

The fourth-seeded Russian lost to 63rd-ranked Marton Fucsovics 6-4, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-1.

Medvedev was in a bad mood throughout, getting warned for an expletive, then being docked a point for smashing his racket in the second-set tiebreaker.

That point came at 6-3 in the tiebreaker, so he lost that set. Fucsovics had been 0-14 against Top 10 opponents.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber lost in the first round of the French Open for the second straight year. The 18th-seeded German was beaten by 19-year-old Slovenian Kaja Juvan 6-3, 6-3.

IPL 2020 : Yuvraj Singh says, ‘Mumbai Indians made a mistake by not sending in-form Ishan Kishan for Super Over’

Did Mumbai Indians made a mistake by not sending in-form Ishan Kishan to play the super over. Many former cricketers think so. They have disagreed with Mumbai Indians decision to not bring out Ishan Kishan for the Super Over.

Former India batsman Yuvraj Singh was one of them. Soon after the Mumbai innings of the Super Over got over, he took to social media, ‘I think Kieron Pollard and Ishan Kishan should have come to bat in the super over! They were set bodies, were warm! I think RCB will just get out of jail here? What say #IPL2020 cause RCB has Mr.360, ABdeVilliers17.

RCB vs MI Highlights : Chech what actually happened in RCB vs MI match ?

Soon after Virat Kohli smacked Jasprit Bumrah for a boundary to win the Super Over in Match 10 of IPL 2020, the image that was stood out was of distraught Ishan Kishan.

Given an opportunity to play his first match for Mumbai Indians on Monday, after Saurabh Tiwary was ruled out because he was ‘unfit for the game’, the young batsman made a match out of almost nothing.

The Mumbai Indians innings was a struggle for the most part of it. Chasing 202 for victory, they were struggling at 112/4 at the end of 15 overs. With a daunting target of 90 runs to win in five overs, it looked like the game was over.
But that’s when Kieron Pollard and Ishan Kishan breathed some life back into the MI fans. They smashed the bowlers for runs, until the target came down to 19 runs in the last over.

With the Sri Lankan Isuru Udana bowling it for the RCB, the first two balls were just a single each.

At 17 runs needed of 4 balls, it certainly looked like it was over, but just then Kishan blasted two sixes over the long-on boundary.

With a seemingly possible, 5 required off 2 balls, he holed up in the deep trying to smack another sixer. He was dismissed for 99. Pollard then managed to pull the last ball for a four, and we were fortunate to witness a second Super Over in 10 games this season.

However, India legend Sachin Tendulkar was ecstatic at the excitement of the game.

‘Ha Ha Ha… this is an unbelievable match. Aur kya kahein,’ he tweeted.

No doubt Unbelievable match & Unbelievable league, as Sourav Ganguly said, this is the best league in the world. Last match centurion Mayank Agarwal also took to social media to say that this is why IPL is the best league in the world.

Real problem with 'disgusting' Broncos stunt

Brisbane Broncos officials being blindsided by Darius Boyd's gender reveal after claiming the wooden spoon was the key problem with the stunt, NRL great Paul Gallen says.

Boyd and the Broncos have been slammed after the retiring club great kicked a plastic football to reveal a pink cloud, signifying an expected baby girl, when Brisbane lost to the Cowboys on Thursday to 'win' the club's first-ever wooden spoon.

In context, it was a jarring moment; branded "disgusting" and "embarrassing" by Broncos chairman Karl Morris. It is understood that no senior Broncos officials were aware of the stunt before it happened.

For Gallen, Cronulla's 2016 premiership-winning captain, that was the biggest problem. The lack of communication and respect inside the club, combined with the absence of self-awareness, was another sign of the rabble that once-mighty Brisbane have been this season.

"They were woeful this year the Broncos, they really were," Gallen told Wide World of Sports on The Final Whistle.

"It's embarrassing for a club like that, the way they've ended up.

"The Darius Boyd gender reveal, I actually had - at the time, or even the next morning - no issue with it; 'What's everyone going on about?'

"But the fact that the club didn't know, that was an error. That was a real error, whether it was by Darius or the playing group, whoever it was, to not allow the club and all the rest of the staff to know what was happening is a huge error.

"Particularly when you're out there, you've just won the club's first-ever wooden spoon in their history, and you're laughing and carrying on and back-slapping and enjoying what's going on.

"I can understand the gender reveal, it's fine had they known about it. But the fact they didn't know about it, those scenes after they just copped their first wooden spoon, that was not a good look for the club."

The Broncos have had a farcical season, winning just three games from 20 to finish last. They also split with coach Anthony Seibold in just the second season of his five-year contract and lost young superstar David Fifita to local rival the Gold Coast Titans.

Any joy felt at the impending arrival of Boyd's third daughter was lost on club officials after the shame of winning the wooden spoon.

"I was embarrassed and disgusted by the gender reveal and celebrations post-match," Morris told Nine News.

An unnamed Broncos legend vented to The Courier Mail: "What has become of this club? Having a gender reveal after winning the wooden spoon? This club has lost all sense of reality. They are a joke."

The Broncos will attempt a drastic resurrection next season - reportedly with club legend Kevin Walters as their new coach and Melbourne Storm's master mentor Craig Bellamy to follow in 2022 as a coaching director.

Why Benji didn't want family at last Tigers game

Benji Marshall may have put on a happy face for the cameras and fans following his side loss to the Eels on Saturday but the truth is the Tigers great is filthy with the club.

Marshall's exit from the club after a rocky year with coach Michael Maguire was the main reason why the Kiwi great rejected an invitation from Tigers officials to have his family to join him on the field after his final game.

Benji Marshal goes down with an MCL injury

While the Marshall-Tigers break-up may have appeared amicable, beneath the surface the relationship has sadly deteriorated.

The Tigers legend is upset by the club's decision not to re-sign him, and even more hurt by the fact he read about it in the media first.

Marshall's family didn't even attend the game and took part in his walk of honour on his own despite the retiring Chris Lawrence being accompanied by his daughter Emme and wife Kathryn.

The Tigers got an exemption to have both families on the field but Marshall opted not to, which was in contrast to his wife and child attending and posing for photos at his 250th game for the Tigers in round 14 before he was told he wasn't part of the club's plans.

Marshall farewells Tigers fans

The Tigers have tried to make a big deal of Marshall's last game but the five-eighth didn't want any fanfare made about his last game for the club. Marshall is confident he will continue his career elsewhere.

The knee injury was an unfortunate end to Marshall's career and the playmaker has garnered plenty of positive reviews about his play this season, with Maroons legend Johnathan Thurston one of several former players dumbfounded by the Tigers' move to drop the star.

Legend, Diamonds star announce their retirement

A Diamonds great and one of her Melbourne Vixens teammates who also played at the top level have announced that they will retire at the end of their Super Netball finals campaign this season.

Caitlin Thwaites, who played 54 games for the Diamonds, scoring 1106 goals at 92 percent accuracy on the way to winning Commonwealth Games and World Cup gold medals, will bid farewell to the sport alongside Tegan Philip, who played 14 test matches for the Diamonds and scored 130 goals.

However, they have one last big assignment ahead of them, with the Vixens finishing on top of the Super Netball table and in perfect position to claim the title.

Caitlin Thwaites

Thwaites will finish her career as one of the most capped national league players of all time, becoming just the fifth player to take the court 230 times. She has scored an incredible 6,801 goals over her 18-year career.

Thwaites began her career with the Melbourne Kestrels in 2002 at only 15 years of age and stayed with the Melbourne side as they became the Melbourne Vixens in 2008, before winning a premiership with them in 2009.

She also played for New Zealand's Central Pulse and the NSW Swifts between stints in Melbourne, winning club MVP awards with both.

"The opportunities that netball has given to me have been incredible and I look forward to giving back to the sport that has given me so much," Thwaites said.

Philip has played with the Vixens for her entire career, joining the team in 2010 and taking the court for them 131 times.

Tegan Philip shoots the ball for the Vixens.

Philip has scored 2,729 goals for the Vixens over her 11 seasons, was named Rookie of the Year in her debut season and was Player of the Match in the 2014 grand final, leading her side to the premiership.

"I feel very privileged to have been able to represent Australia in the sport that I love," Philip said.

"It's such an enjoyable but hard working environment and one that I am grateful to have been a part of. I have so many great memories that I will certainly cherish."

Netball Australia CEO Marne Fechner reflected on Thwaites' and Philip's careers.

"Both Caitlin and Tegan have been exemplary ambassadors for netball over their long and illustrious careers and I thank them for their respective contributions to the sport, both on and off the court," she said.

"Everyone from Netball Australia and the broader netball community wishes both Caitlin and Tegan the very best with what comes next."

EPL handball rule draws widespread ire

Jose Mourinho had seen enough.

The fulltime whistle had yet to be blown but the Tottenham manager stormed down the tunnel — his head down and hands in his pockets — after seeing his team fall foul of a handball ruling that has quickly become the biggest talking point of the Premier League season.

It was the fifth minute of stoppage time and Tottenham was seeing out a 1-0 lead against Newcastle when a ball was pumped into Spurs' penalty area from a free kick. A header by Newcastle substitute Andy Carroll struck the outstretched arm of Eric Dier — as the Tottenham defender was looking the other way — and loud appeals from Newcastle players reverberated around the empty stadium.

Almost inevitably, a penalty was awarded after the referee took the opportunity to view the incident on the pitchside monitor.

Callum Wilson converted the spot kick from Newcastle's first shot on target all match, the visitors were about to escape with a 1-1 draw, and a disgusted Mourinho didn't want to hang around.

"It's an absolute disgrace. An absolute joke," Liverpool great Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports.

"Newcastle fans will be ecstatic, I can understand that but everyone else in this country will say exactly what I'm saying.

"Eric Dier jumps for the ball, has no control of where his arms are going to be, it was a header half a yard away from him, hits him on the back of his arm, he has no idea what's going on. This is a joke.

"Whether it's the Premier League, the FA, FIFA, Pierluigi Collina, whoever is involved in this, stop it, because you're ruining football for everybody. Absolute joke.

It was also a day to forget for Mourinho's big coaching rival, Pep Guardiola, whose Manchester City team conceded three penalties — none of them for handball, however — and lost 5-2 at home to Leicester.

https://twitter.com/davidcoldwell/status/1310288864112713741?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfwhttps://twitter.com/MaxBretosSports/status/1310278947960045573?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

Jamie Vardy scored a hat trick, with two of them coming from the penalty spot. There have already been 20 penalties in just 25 games in the Premier League this season, and there is likely to be many more as defenders struggle to adapt to a newly adopted interpretation of the defensive handball rule.

The Premier League has fallen in line with the rest of European soccer this season to apply the ruling in a stricter way rather simply than judging it on intent. Like Robin Koch, Victor Lindelof, Matt Doherty, Neal Maupay and Joel Ward before him this season, Dier was adjudged to have made his body unnaturally bigger by having his arm out when it was hit by the ball, leaving the referee little option but to award a penalty by the letter of the law.

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson said the newly adopted rule was "killing the game" after his team lost 2-1 to Everton on Saturday after conceding a handball penalty for the winning goal. Mourinho chose not to criticize the rule for fear of collecting a fine from the Football Association, but his Newcastle counterpart had his say.

"It's a total nonsense," Steve Bruce said. "We've got one today and we should be jumping for joy and through hoops, but I'd be devastated if it was against us."

Players past and present spoke of their opposition to the rule interpretation, too.

"The FA needs to start asking themselves some serious questions," tweeted Jan Vertonghen, the former Tottenham defender who recently moved to Benfica. "Absolutely shocking decisions and they are hiding behind the referees."

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher urged the game's governing bodies to "sort this out."

"This penalty nonsense is ruining the game," Carragher tweeted.

Leicester became the first team to score three penalties in a single Premier League game, according to the league's official statistics supplier, Opta.
