Zverev breaks silence on explosive allegations

World No.7 Alexander Zverev has strongly denied allegations from his ex-girlfriend that he was abusive during the pair's relationship.

Zverev said he had been made "very sad" by claims from his former partner Olga Sharypova that he once tried to "strangle" her, labelling the allegations "unfounded".

The 23-year-old also revealed that he was set to become a father in a lengthy statement on his personal Twitter account.

"We have know each other since we were children and shared many experiences together," Zverev said of Sharypova.

"I very much regret that she makes such statements because the accusations are simply not true.

Alexander Zverev

"We had a relationship, but it ended a long time ago. Why Olga is making these accusations now, I just don't know.

"I really hope that the two of us will find a way to deal with each other again in a reasonable and respectful way."

The off-court controversy comes at an extremely inopportune time for the talented German after a successful 2020 season which saw him reach his first Grand Slam final.

Zverev began the year in sensational fashion, reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open, before following it up with a fourth-round exit at Roland Garros and a US Open final defeat to Dominic Thiem.

The talented right-hander's 14-3 Grand Slam record in 2020 was a career-best year since he first appeared in a Grand Slam tournament back in 2014.

Only eight days after the loss the club had released a statement acknowledging that Martin, who was 22 at the time, was set to "pursue other opportunities" after a three-year deal reportedly worth $600 per-season wasn't secured.

The now three-time premiership player would end up publicly touring the Giants' facilities with a five-year deal worth in the ballpark of $700,000 a year put on the table.

And according to Carr, he and Stephen Silvagni, who was the Giants' list manager at the time, were both certain a deal was done to send Martin to Greater Western Sydney before it unexpectedly got pulled.

Dustin Martin of the Tigers fends off a tackle by Tim Taranto of the Giants

"We thought the deal was done," Carr told AFL Trade Radio.

"Between Dustin, myself and SOS (Stephen Silvagni), we thought he was a GWS player at that point.

"We'd been up there, Dustin was going to reunite with his father in Sydney because he'd had personal issues about not being closer to his father and we thought the deal was done.

"The next thing I heard, it got pulled from above. I don't think even SOS knows where it got pulled from."

Tigers' celebrations continue after GF triumph

Despite being the list manager at the club, Silvagni was adamant he had no idea who caused the move to fall through.

"I actually don't know [who pulled the deal]," Silvagni said.

Carr added: "We thought it was done and then the next time I spoke to SOS, we just didn't know.

"We knew it came from above. Maybe it was the CEO, maybe it was someone at the AFL, I'm not too sure."

"You put Dustin Martin in that GWS team, which they were assembling then, wow … I dare say they would have won a couple of flags."

National anthem dumped from State of Origin

The Australian national anthem has reportedly been dumped from this year's State of Origin series.

The Daily Telegraph reported the controversial move on Thursday, following a meeting of the ARL Commission.

The series begins next Wednesday in Adelaide and this will be the first time in the 40-year history of Origin that Advance Australia Fair will not be played before kick-off.

The decision was made by the ARL Commission/NRL. The Telegraph reported that the NSW Rugby League was against the move; for which the rationale was that NSW vs Queensland was not an international fixture, despite the anthem being played before the Penrith vs Melbourne NRL grand final on Sunday.

Blues players Latrell Mitchell, Cody Walker and Josh Addo-Carr were outspoken critics of the anthem before Origin I last year and refused to sing, as did Queensland's Will Chambers. Those players are Indigenous men, who felt that the anthem did not represent their heritage and was borne of Australia's troubled colonial history.

NSW coach Brad Fittler did not support dumping the anthem last year but fully backed his players' right to boycott the song.

NSW fullback crisis as Papenhuyzen ruled out

Melbourne Storm speedster Ryan Papenhuyzen will reportedly miss Game One of State of Origin as he struggles to recover from a calf injury.

A huge blow struck the Blues camp this morning when news surfaced that the fullback had been battling with calf issues ahead of the series opener in Adelaide.

Those fears have now been confirmed with the Clive Churchill Medallist reportedly set to miss Origin I.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald's Michael Chammas, Papnehuyzen has been ruled out of Wednesday's game but is expected to be available for Game Two in Sydney.

Ryan Papenhuyzen looks set to miss Game One of the State of Origin through injury. (Getty)

"Looks like Ryan Papenhuyzen has been ruled out of Origin I with a calf injury," Chammas tweeted. "Will be right for game two.

"Tedesco still not training with main group but 50-50. Gutherson and Cody Walker training at fullback."

https://twitter.com/MichaelChammas/status/1321616674726965248

The electric playmaker is one of the most highly-anticipated debutants within the Blues squad, fresh off Melbourne's grand final victory and his own Clive Churchill Medal nod.

Papenhuyzen had been talked up as the top pick to replace NSW fullback James Tedesco, should the Roosters No.1 fail to overcome a knee injury in time for Game One.

However, his omission from the series opener throws the door wide open for Eels skipper Clint Gutherson to play his preferred position. He had been tipped for a spot in the starting side at right centre instead.

Should Gutherson be named at fullback it would likely open the door for either Zac Lomax or Stephen Crichton to make their Origin debut at right centre.

Wallabies coach Dave Rennie has turned to four youngsters in an attempt to tie up the Bledisloe Cup against New Zealand at ANZ Stadium this Saturday.

After Game 1 finished with the two teams level, the Wallabies find themselves in a must-win situation this weekend following the All Blacks' 27-7 Game 2 win.

Noah Lolesio and Irae Simone will start for Rennie, replacing the injured James O'Connor and Matt To'omua.

Lolesio and Simone are two of four uncapped players in Rennie's 23-man squad, with Queensland duo Tate McDermott and Fraser McReight set to start on the bench.

Dave Rennie at Sky Stadium in Wellington.

"It's really exciting to be able to name four more debutants in the squad this week," Rennie said in a Rugby Australia statement.

"Noah and Irae have played a lot of footy together and we have no doubt they're ready to take the step up to Test rugby. Tate and Fraser have had big Super Rugby seasons and have impressed in training over the past month.

"It's an especially significant night for us with the chance to represent and celebrate our First Nations people by wearing the Indigenous jersey on home soil in front of our Wallabies family.

"We know New Zealand will pose another tough challenge but we've prepared well and will be ready to go on Saturday night."

Teen in Wally's unrecognisable Maroons side

Queensland icon Wally Lewis has named nine debutants in his Maroons State of Origin team, saying he'd pick Broncos teenager Xavier Coates.

Lewis named his Maroons 17 for Wide World of Sports ahead of next Wednesday's Origin series opener in Adelaide.

The rugby league Immortal has backed Titans ace AJ Brimson to play fullback in Kalyn Ponga's absence and said he'd start Roosters prop Lindsay Collins.

Due to injuries and form, there are 10 changes from the side that Queensland fielded in Origin III last year.

"He had a fantastic end of the season, absolutely sensational," Lewis said of Brimson on QLDER.

"I think when he gets an opportunity to go out there, if he's selected at fullback for the game, we're going to feel pretty good about it because he certainly does inspire those in front of him.

"I think he's fantastic, had to put him there ... he's been absolutely wonderful all season long."

Bennett said that with a big performance in Origin I, Brimson could quash any push for Valentine Holmes to play fullback in game two. The Cowboys superstar is banned for the series opener due to a shoulder charge in the NRL's final round.

Lewis opted for Knights winger Edrick Lee to debut and backed him to be a handful with his height, while also opting for Coates, who has played just 15 NRL games. The 19-year-old flyer was a rare bright spot in a historically-dismal wooden spoon season for Brisbane.

"I thought he had a wonderful season for the Broncos, a really good year," Lewis said.

"He'll probably be a little bit nervous in a game of this size but it'll be good."

Storm premiership winner Brenko Lee would partner proven Origin star Dane Gagai in the centres.

"He probably feels pretty good about the way he's performing at the moment," Lewis said.

Cameron Munster and Daly Cherry-Evans pick themselves as the halves, while Collins would debut alongside gun prop Josh Papalii in the starting front-row.

"It might be a little bit of a surprise introduction for Lindsay to come straight into the side, a lot of people probably expect to see him on the bench at best, but I quite like this bloke," Lewis said.

"I've liked watching him all season long and he has been a good performer."

Surprisingly, Lewis opted for Roosters hooker Jake Friend over Wests Tigers/Storm star Harry Grant.

While it's an immensely deserved nod for Friend, Lewis rates Dally M Rookie of the Year Grant as a 10-year No.9 for the Maroons.

"The experience of Jake Friend at No.9, probably could have gone two or three different ways there but I think he'll add some experience there," Lewis said.

Back-rowers Felise Kaufusi, Christian Welch and Jai Arrow have all represented Queensland before, as has bench utility Ben Hunt. Lewis filled out the remainder of his bench with rookies: forwards Jaydn Su'A (Rabbitohs), Luke Capewell (Panthers) and Tino Fa'asuamaleaui (Storm).

"Jaydn Su'A, he's a bloke that will run through a brick wall. He could be playing against his parents and he would smash them to pieces and wait until full-time to ask how they were feeling. Fantastic player," Lewis said.

"Kurt Capewell, he's just a workhorse, done enormous work. And Tino from Melbourne ... he's got size, he's got a little bit of brute strength about him, but he has an enormous work rate and that's definitely needed when he comes off the bench in Origin."

Aussie prodigy earns first national call-up

Emerging all-rounder Cameron Green has earned his first call-up to the national side, named in an 18-man squad for the limited-overs matches against India.

The 21-year-old, along with New South Wales all-rounder Moises Henriques, are the notable inclusions in the squad.

The pair come into the squad which is missing Mitchell Marsh, who injured his ankle while playing in the Indian Premier League.

"Cameron's domestic form has been outstanding and he has carried it through for Western Australia this summer," selector Trevor Hohns said.

"As a potential player of the future this is an opportunity for him to be part of the squad and build on his experience."

Green has already made four Sheffield Shield hundreds, including 197 against New South Wales last week. His first-class batting average of 52, along with his bowling average of 21, has many tipping big things from him in the future.

Just last week former Australian captain Greg Chappell told The Australian that Green was the best young player he'd seen since Ricky Ponting.

Henriques, who led the Sydney Sixers to the BBL title in 2019-20, earns another shot at international level, having last represented Australia in 2017.

Cameron Green celebrates his century for Western Australia against NSW.

"Moises is a tremendous cricketer with loads of experience and is a great person to have around the group. His form was extremely impressive in leading the Sixers to the BBL title last summer and he has played well at the start of this season," Hohns said.

Cricket Australia's move to give players a rest from hubs before the Big Bash League will leave off-spinner Nathan Lyon without a top-level match in five weeks, leading into the first Test against India.

Lyon has been overlooked for the six white-ball matches against India that precede the Test series, meaning the Sheffield Shield match between New South Wales and Tasmania, due to start on November 8, will be his last competitive hit out before the Adelaide Test on December 17.

In normal circumstances the Sheffield Shield would run through until late November, with the BBL currently scheduled to start on December 3. However, CA is determined to give the players a break from hubs at some point during the season.

Lyon, who is on track to play his 100th Test match at the Gabba in January, needs just 10 more wickets to become the third Australian, after Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath, to take 400 Test wickets.

Nathan Lyon

His success in the red ball format has never translated to the limited overs game, where he's played just 29 ODIs and two T20s for Australia, with his most recent appearance in the short forms coming at the 2019 World Cup.

Lyon went to England in September for the ODI and T20 series, but didn't play a game with selectors preferring Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar for the spinning duties.

India will likely start favourites for the 50-over series, having won the corresponding fixtures 2-1 the last time they visited these shores, in 2018. India are currently ranked second in the world in that format of the game, with Australia fourth.

Australian limited-overs squad: Aaron Finch (c), Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins (vc), Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Moises Henriques, Marnus Labuschagne, Glenn Maxwell, Daniel Sams, Kane Richardson, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Adam Zampa.

NBA star sparks feud with ex-teammate's wife

J.R Smith is widely known for throwing soup at an assistant coach and forgetting the score in a pivotal moment during the 2018 finals which led to one of the most memorable NBA memes of all time.

Yet the Lakers star keeps giving us little nuggets to remember him by once he's long gone from the league.

The two-time champion set off a feud this week with former teammate Sam Dekker and his reporter wife after he made some candid comments during a podcast appearance.

Speaking on the "All Things Covered" podcast with Arizona Cardinals star Patrick Peterson of the NFL, Smith was asked which teammate he disliked the most during his time in the NBA.

"Throughout my whole career, there's only one teammate I don't like," Smith said.

"He know that. Everybody else I'm cool with. Man, this dude Sam Dekker. This dude. He said some bulls–t on the bus one day, talking some Trump s–t. And I just wasn't having it.

https://twitter.com/RTNBA/status/1320122031241891840?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

"The question he asked, it's a thought pattern. You were taught that. It's the hate you give. The privilege he has was taught to him, and he took heed of it and run with it even further than somebody … who was oblivious to what they have and the life they lived.

"Because some people just go through their life not necessarily knowing, but not aware and privy to someone else's circumstances.

"He's a person who's just very aware of somebody else's circumstances and want to keep them there, as opposed to try to help him elevate up. And I don't respect anything about that."

https://twitter.com/TheRealJRSmith/status/1321163496848019456?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfwhttps://twitter.com/TheRealJRSmith/status/1321167986800140295?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

Smith and Dekker were briefly teammates on the Cavaliers in 2018 and the comments sparked a stern reaction from Dekker's wife, Olivia Harlan-Dekker, the daughter of TNT broadcaster Kevin Harlan.

Dekker's better half heard what Smith had said and proceeded to defend her husband on Twitter describing the claims "Extremely inaccurate and unfair." And said to "Consider the source."

Dekker, who is currently playing in the Turkish Basketball League, tweeted that he was "blindsided" by Smith's comments, according to Deadspin. Dekker deleted the tweet.

"Well I am just as confused as y'all," Dekker wrote. "I'm pretty simple, I've never been one to get into politics. Especially 'Trump s--t.' I've never been a Trump guy, so this blindsided me."

Dons sack football boss in brutal internal review

Essendon's summer of upheaval has taken a stunning move with football boss Dan Richardson sacked after three years in the job.

Richardson joined the Bombers at the end of 2017 after a lengthy stint with the Tigers and had hoped to instill a similar culture at Tullamarine, but will now depart on the eve of what looms as a vital off-season for the club, according to The Age.

The sacking comes as Essendon undertakes an internal review headed by new president Paul Brasher and football director Sean Wellman into its football department after a horror 2020 season.

Richardson is understood to have been central in the decision to recruit senior coach Ben Rutten over from Richmond, and his departure now means Rutten's biggest supporter within the organisation is gone.

Dan Richardson

There is no doubt that Richardson will be far from the first casualty at Essendon this summer after Brasher promised members a "brutally honest" review into the club and its culture.

"We had a disappointing season, and a particularly half a dozen last rounds. The coming weeks will be about listening and digging to understand exactly where we are," Brasher told Essendon's website earlier in October.

"Yesterday, we had a scheduled end-of-season football review Board meeting where the Board engaged at length with Ben (Rutten), Dan (Richardson), Adrian (Dodoro) and Xavier (Campbell) on a review of the season, and our strategy going forward.

"I have been talking to a lot of people within the club and outside to begin to get a feel for what is happening and where we are. While I don't necessarily agree with everything I hear, I do listen and I, along with the Board, take it seriously."

Crows vow to play hardball on Crouch trade talks

Adelaide has vowed to match St Kilda's contract offer for wantaway midfielder Brad Crouch if the compensation draft pick doesn't come at No.2.

Crouch has nominated St Kilda as his club of choice, but as a restricted free agent, Adelaide still reserves the right to match any offer in order to force a trade.

According to Adelaide football boss Adam Kelly, the Crows are wary of the compromised nature of this year's draft with a number of players already tied to clubs via academies.

"We're obviously hopeful the compensation would be resulting in pick two, and it's only really under those circumstances we would consider matching and looking to force a trade or obtain Brad's services," he told AFL Trade Radio.

Brad Crouch Adelaide Crows

"Fortunately, in this situation, Brad's been fairly open about his love of Adelaide and of the footy club, so we don't think it would be a scenario where the player would not be wanting to come back to the club, so we would certainly look to match if it's not resulting in pick two.

"We'll certainly be looking for a better outcome than what that compensation would be if it's not pick two, because [otherwise] it would be end of first round or start of second, which because of our ladder position is effectively the same thing.

"That pick itself could push out to the mid-20s after all the Next Generation Academy [bids] come through.

"We don't see that as adequate compensation for a player of Brad's calibre, so we would certainly be looking at matching."

Orazio Fantasia

The Crows have also been linked with Essendon forward Orazio Fantasia, who is keen to come back home to South Australia, but Kelly admitted that the 25-year-old was unlikely to end up at West Lakes.

"We haven't spoken to Orazio for a number of weeks now," he said.

"We did have some discussion with him a few weeks ago, and have an interest in him if he was to return to SA, but we haven't spoken to him for a number of weeks now.

"It'd be fair to make that assessment (that he has chosen Port Adelaide). We haven't heard that directly from Orazio, so it's not our place to say, but we haven't heard from him for a few weeks now."

Origin stars make million-dollar 'sacrifice'

NRL stars have reportedly copped a significant pay-cut for this year's State of Origin series.

Ahead of next Wednesday's Origin opener, according to the Sydney Morning Herald players have agreed to give up a total of nearly $1.5 million after their match fees were reduced from $30,000 to $10,000 each.

Additionally, NSW and Queensland stars that don't play in any of the three games will receive just $2,000 a week while in camp training in the bubble.

The agreement was brokered between the Rugby League Players' Association and the NRL although the league is yet to officially approve the proposal. The motivation for the cuts was to preserve and "top up" the salaries of players going into the 2021 NRL season.

"We've spoken in the past how the boys will turn up and play no matter what," NSW's Tyson Frizell told the Herald.

"This is a sacrifice we've made to help get the [revised CBA] across the line, and we can put back money where it can be used for better things and all the other players' payments.

"We always knew we were going to take a haircut. This deal is nice and fair, and it will help the salaries for the boys in the NRL a little bit.

"Everyone has done it tough. A lot of the boys have sacrificed a lot. We just hope we can get the game back to normal as soon as possible.''

Joey and Gal pick their Blues teams for game one: The Blueprint

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the NRL has been hit hard financially, and the timing could not be worse for players with the RLPA currently still re-negotiating the last two years of the collective bargaining agreement.

This year NRL players were forced to take on extra responsibilities in maintaining the league's biosecurity bubble while collecting just over 50 percent of their pay in the last five months of the season.

The reduction of Origin payments is just the latest financial sacrifice players have copped as rugby league manages the impact of COVID-19 around the country.

Rugby league legend loses brave health battle

Ray Blacklock defied the doctors by living five years longer than the experts predicted after succumbing to a horrible disease - but the former Newtown, Penrith and Canberra star finally lost his brave battle early today.

The first man to lead the Panthers to a premiership, Blacklock was diagnosed with Multi System Atrophy - a horrible and rare neurological disorder that slowly eats away at the body - in 2015.

Medical experts told him he had only months to live, but Blacklock fought a gutsy battle before finally passing away today, aged 65.

"I am losing my balance and need a walking stick to get around," a sad Blacklock told me a few years ago.

Newtown's Ray Blacklock gets Parramatta's Mick Cronin in a copybook tackle around the legs

"It was a terrible shock when I found out what I had - and that it will one day kill me, but life is full of ups and downs I guess. Basically, I just sit at home all day and watch Foxtel - I still love the footy. I didn't think anyone remembered me or cared anymore.

"But Penrith held a benefit night for me last year and I was really moved at the number of people who turned up. They showed video of some of the tries I scored. I thought they hit the fast forward button - I never realised I was that quick!

"It is a struggle but (former Panthers team-mate) Lou Zivanovic has been a godsend. He probably wouldn't want me telling you this, but he looks after me - with money, support and friendship. He has set me up at a house in Cranebrook, not far from Penrith Park where it all started for me."

Coach Warren Ryan is decidedly happy with his speedy flankmen, Ray Blacklock, left, and John Ferguson.

Blacklock captained Penrith to the under-23 premiership in 1978 and went on to play in the 1981 grand final for Newtown, enjoying a stellar career and scoring many spectacular tries.

Like many young Indigenous boys, his hero growing up was Arthur Beetson.

"My debut was against the Roosters and Arthur welcomed me to first grade with the best stiff arm I ever got," he said.

Ray Blacklock is tackles in 1981.

"I was seeing stars everywhere. The ref called Arthur over and I'm pretty sure he was about to send him off. But I bounced to my feet and ran to the ref and said to him, 'Please don't send him off - he's my hero!'

"I think the ref took pity on me and let Artie stay on the field. We became mates and were great friends til the day he died."

Talking Horses: Ladbrokes quit tracks in blow for struggling betting ring

Ladbrokes and Coral, two of the most familiar brands in betting, will vanish from the racecourse rings in Britain and Ireland

Ladbrokes and Coral, two of the most familiar brands in betting, will vanish from the racecourse rings in Britain and Ireland following the news that GVC, the parent company of both firms, has agreed to sell its 106 pitches to a rival bookie and withdraw from on-course operations.

GVC’s pitches – 85 in the UK and 21 in Ireland - have been sold en bloc to John Hooper, who trades on course under the name Sid Hooper. Hooper also bought William Hill’s 82 pitches when the firm made the same move out of the ring two years ago. Seventeen members of GVC staff are now in consultation over their futures.

Double roster bomb ticking for Panthers

The Penrith Panthers are about to face a raft of tough decisions over their roster, rugby league great Peter Sterling says, as they try to retain the best talent from their dominant 2020 side.

The Panthers lost just two games all year, one of them being Sunday's grand final against Melbourne.

They remain almost intact for next season but have key players coming off contract on November 1, available to take bids from rival clubs for 2022 onwards.

Off-contract players include NSW State of Origin rookies Jarome Luai, Stephen Crichton and Isaah Yeo, plus Matt Burton, Kurt Capewell, Mitch Kenny, Spencer Leniu, Josh Mansour, Brent Naden and Zane Tetevano.

Penrith have something of a salary cap double whammy: they face inevitable contract upgrades due to both a strong season and the rise of many young players. With another strong campaign expected next year, their cap pressure will only increase.

"They're in really good shape next year," Sterling told Wide World of Sports, reviewing the Panthers' season with Mat Thompson.

"They obviously lose a real leader in James Tamou, who's off to the Wests Tigers, but they've pretty much retained all those young players coming through.

"That will be the difficulty for them in the coming years, to keep everyone together, because they're going to appreciate in value, these young players.

"But the nucleus of the squad is really there. They've got a young spine. Dylan Edwards was outstanding, he'll have Charlie Staines putting pressure on him as well, so there's pressure coming up from outside the group.

"Luai and [Nathan] Cleary were fantastic. I don't know what's going to happen with Matt Burton but if he's there, he's going to continue to put pressure and Luai.

"And to me, Api Koroisau was the buy of the year and has still got plenty of football left in him, and Mitch Kenny is a great understudy as well. So they've got an excellent run-on 13, they've got a great bench, but they've also got players that are going to keep pressure on that 17.

"The difficulty is going to be keeping all those young players because if Matt Burton's not getting any footy, and he didn't get any this year ... I imagine he's frustrated by that and other clubs see the value in a Matt Burton. He'd be snapped up, there'd be six other clubs, like 'that', that would be interested in Matt Burton.

"He'll want to be a part of what's happening at Penrith but if you're not getting footy, all of a sudden pastures elsewhere can look a lot greener."

Burton, 20, looks a genuine star but was kept out of the side by Luai's excellent form. Luai will undoubtedly be a major priority for re-signing, having entirely justified his standing as Cleary's preferred halves partner. Burton would still be up against tough competition at Penrith if he converted to a ball-playing back-rower, given that Yeo, Viliame Kikau and Liam Martin were all superb this season.

The Dubbo product has been touted as a potential target for the Bulldogs, where 2020 Panthers assistant Trent Barrett has just started as head coach. Canterbury just signed Kyle Flanagan on a three-year deal, after the young halfback was released by the Roosters despite a decent season.

Fullback prospect Staines was also touted as a possible Bulldogs target but re-signed with Penrith during the season, following an incredible four-try debut on the wing. Right centre Naden may be second-guessing his standing at Penrith after being benched for both the preliminary and grand final matches.

The player who replaced Naden in the starting side for those games, utility Tyrone May, remains unsigned for next season but it expected to stay with the Panthers. Back-up fullback Caleb Aikens is also unsigned, while fiery prop Jack Hetherington has joined the Bulldogs on a two-year contract.

Mansour seems another obvious re-signing priority, as a loyal Panthers clubman who is coming off a big season. Along with fellow winger Brian To'o, Mansour offered Penrith exceptionally powerful starts to sets coming out of their own end.

The problem, though, it fitting all their stars under the salary cap and they may rely on some taking 'unders' on new contracts. The obvious incentive for players to stick with Penrith is the chance to compete for premierships for the foreseeable future, yet coach Ivan Cleary and Panthers officials will likely encounter plenty of cap headaches.

For now, Penrith are sifting through the wreckage of their grand final loss, in which they trailed the Storm 22-0 at half-time.

"They'll learn from that, they'll be smarting from that. I can tell you that they'll carry the loss forever, but they'll carry the hurt through into the pre-season and that will be a huge motivator going into next year," Sterling said.

"I have never been of the belief that you have to lose a grand final to win a grand final but in this instance, it's a major education for the Penrith Panthers. What they learnt out of this game will carry them. They've just got to put themselves in a position like this again.

"That's the disappointing thing: when you've been all good so year, you lose one game, you come into the grand final and you don't play your best football. The Melbourne Storm gave us what we expected from the Melbourne Storm. We didn't quite get what we were expecting and hoping for from the Penrith Panthers.

"It's all there. They just need to continue to work hard, learn from this experience, get better in all areas of the game.

"I think they did get flustered by the scoreboard to some degree. A lot of play-the-ball mistakes and in your haste to get back into the game, those are the kind of errors that occur, so you just need to be mentally tougher.

"They maintained their belief, they maintained their energy, they just got a little bit loose in trying to get back into the game. You have to go through that to learn from it."
