Origin stars make million-dollar 'sacrifice'

NRL stars have reportedly copped a significant pay-cut for this year's State of Origin series.

Ahead of next Wednesday's Origin opener, according to the Sydney Morning Herald players have agreed to give up a total of nearly $1.5 million after their match fees were reduced from $30,000 to $10,000 each.

Additionally, NSW and Queensland stars that don't play in any of the three games will receive just $2,000 a week while in camp training in the bubble.

The agreement was brokered between the Rugby League Players' Association and the NRL although the league is yet to officially approve the proposal. The motivation for the cuts was to preserve and "top up" the salaries of players going into the 2021 NRL season.

"We've spoken in the past how the boys will turn up and play no matter what," NSW's Tyson Frizell told the Herald.

"This is a sacrifice we've made to help get the [revised CBA] across the line, and we can put back money where it can be used for better things and all the other players' payments.

"We always knew we were going to take a haircut. This deal is nice and fair, and it will help the salaries for the boys in the NRL a little bit.

"Everyone has done it tough. A lot of the boys have sacrificed a lot. We just hope we can get the game back to normal as soon as possible.''

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the NRL has been hit hard financially, and the timing could not be worse for players with the RLPA currently still re-negotiating the last two years of the collective bargaining agreement.

This year NRL players were forced to take on extra responsibilities in maintaining the league's biosecurity bubble while collecting just over 50 percent of their pay in the last five months of the season.

The reduction of Origin payments is just the latest financial sacrifice players have copped as rugby league manages the impact of COVID-19 around the country.
