Zverev breaks silence on explosive allegations

World No.7 Alexander Zverev has strongly denied allegations from his ex-girlfriend that he was abusive during the pair's relationship.

Zverev said he had been made "very sad" by claims from his former partner Olga Sharypova that he once tried to "strangle" her, labelling the allegations "unfounded".

The 23-year-old also revealed that he was set to become a father in a lengthy statement on his personal Twitter account.

"We have know each other since we were children and shared many experiences together," Zverev said of Sharypova.

"I very much regret that she makes such statements because the accusations are simply not true.

"We had a relationship, but it ended a long time ago. Why Olga is making these accusations now, I just don't know.

"I really hope that the two of us will find a way to deal with each other again in a reasonable and respectful way."

The off-court controversy comes at an extremely inopportune time for the talented German after a successful 2020 season which saw him reach his first Grand Slam final.

Zverev began the year in sensational fashion, reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open, before following it up with a fourth-round exit at Roland Garros and a US Open final defeat to Dominic Thiem.

The talented right-hander's 14-3 Grand Slam record in 2020 was a career-best year since he first appeared in a Grand Slam tournament back in 2014.
