Novak Djokovic Aims To Break The Record For Most Number Of Grand Slams

Tennis resumed after a prolonged break due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the US Open 2020 commencing on August 31, tennis returns to its greatest theatre. With Wimbledon being called off and the French Open being scheduled later this year, the US Open would be an interesting watch. World Number one Novak Djokovic would be looking to clinching his 18th Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows.

Leading the race for the most Grand Slams, Roger Federer sits comfortably with 20 Major titles to his name. Out of which Federer holds 8 Wimbledon titles. Spanish sensation Rafael Nadal sits second with 19 titles to his name. he owns staggering tally of 11 French Open crowns, and the King of Clay is eyeing to increase his Slam tally at Roland Garros this year.

Roger Federer

Novak Djokovic slides in third in the list with 17 Grand Slam titles. With the majority of his titles coming from the Australian Open, he is sensational down under. However, he’s just 33 years old. Definitely, he has a well 6-7 years tennis left in him. Federer’s record looks vulnerable as the Swiss maestro is nearing 40 and suffering from frequent injuries. Though Rafa remains a tough competitor, yet Djokovic has the scale towards him. Novak looks forward to breaking the Grand Slam record. Also, he aims to surpass Federer’s record of 310 weeks of Wolrd Number one.

“I believe I can win the most slams and break the record for longest number one. Those are definitely my clear goals”, Novak Djokovic stated.

Federer is sidelined due to surgery and he has called his 2020 season. Rafael Nadal has pulled out from the US Open. He is focusing on Paris Major.

Novak Djokovic has a clear path ahead

With both Rafa and Roger out of the US Open, Djokovic holds a golden opportunity to reduce the Grand Slam gap. He’d then be one short of Nadal and two short of Federer. If he manages to clinch the US Open, surely the Spaniard would be given a run for his money in the French Open this year.

Even though Djokovic would be going in as the top seed, his path is not easy. Young guns such as Denis Shapovalov, Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas would be ready to pounce on him. However, his charismatic win in the recently concluded Western and Southern Open would give him an added boost for the New York Major.
