The US Open has finally kicked off, however, the tournament is aware of the COVID-19 threat. So plenty of measures are being taken, like banning spectators and placing the players in a ‘bubble’ to ensure their safety. Recently, Victoria Azarenka spoke to the US Open website in an interview to talk about this so-called bubble.
The Belarusian confirmed that she is not taking up accommodation with any other player. Instead, she has her own residence and is staying there for the duration of the tournament. Azarenka even dubbed the bubble, ‘a golden prison’. This is largely because, though her place of residence is ‘nice’, she cannot go anywhere at all.
She said, “For my peace of mind, it’s easier to be just with my family. My feeling is just moving from my home to another home, but I still have my team around. I have my son and my mom around. That is a little bit easier mentally.”
What else did Victoria Azarenka say?
The former world number 1 confessed that nobody is used to being holed in one place until their respective matches. However, she is firmly putting those thoughts out of her mind and focusing on playing tennis. At the end of the day, Victoria Azarenka wants to stay healthy and continue playing tennis as long as possible.
She continued, “I try to be as cautious as possible for me and my family, for my team. But if I will sit here and say that it’s amazing, it’s not. It sucks. But it is what it is. It’s where we are in the world right now. We have to try to do our best to be able to play tennis, to have a tournament together.”
According to her, the best thing that everyone can do is figure out the best way to move forward. This is because the pandemic is here to stay for a long time until a cure can be found.
At US Open 2020 she’ll play the repeat match of the first round at US Open 2019 as she takes on her compatriot Aryna Sabalenka in the second round at Flushing Meadows.
