Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon has criticised Collingwood's reported Jack Gunston chase, questioning whether any player would want to join the club.
Lyon's call comes as Collingwood actively attempts to offload a number of their players due to a salary cap squeeze, with star midfielder Adam Treloar the pick of the names.
Collingwood is reportedly willing to pay at least $100,000 of Treloar's salary next season if it is able to find a suitor for the 27-year-old.
However, Lyon suggested that the Magpies' attempt to trade Treloar just 12 months after he signed a long-term deal meant the likes of Gunston would be hesitant to accept a contract.
"Collingwood are going back to players left, right and centre going, 'Yeah, we mucked up your contract, give us some money back, otherwise we'll move you on'. That's essentially what they're doing," he told SEN.
"Then amidst all of that they're making a play for Jack Gunston. Why would Jack Gunston go to Collingwood when they're signing blokes and then a year later they're going, 'Give us your money back', that's not the time to chase someone.
"If you're Jack Gunston, you're going, 'Beg your pardon, you're giving a contract to me, the one like you did Adam Treloar. Is that what I'm looking at in a couple of years' time?'."
Lyon also questioned whether higher-ups at Collingwood should have their jobs on the line after the gross mismanagement of the club's salary cap.
"I don't know who is to blame at Collingwood – will someone get the sack for this?" he said.
"I'm talking about Adam Treloar's five-year contract which they don't want anymore, we're talking about Jaidyn Stephenson's two-year contract extension, which they're happy to offload, we're talking about Tom Phillips who has a year to run on his contract.
"Who do we blame for that and who is going to be ultimately held accountable?"
