BBL reveal first fixtures amid 'complex' situation

The Big Bash League have announced the first fixtures for the upcoming season, after revealing the revised schedule for the summer of cricket.

In the 10th year of the BBL, due to significant financial and logistical obstacles caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the fixture has caused a headache for organisers.

The BBL announced that there will be 21 BBL matches held throughout the month of December, with Tasmania, ACT, Queensland and South Australia hosting those fixtures.

The venues for matches in January are still yet to be announced with border restrictions to contain the pandemic still an issue for the BBL, but another 35 regular season matches as well as finals fixtures are expected to be confirmed in the "coming weeks".

"The League hopes the easing of border restrictions around the country will allow matches to be played in every state throughout the tournament. The health and safety of players, staff and fans will always remain the number one priority," the BBL said in a statement on Thursday.

The BBL season opener will be held at Blundstone Arena in Tasmania, with the Hobart Hurricanes taking on the defending champions, the Sydney Sixers.

"This is without doubt the most complex fixturing task ever undertaken by the League and we are excited with where it has landed. It has been a difficult year for so many people around Australia and we look forward to bringing the BBL to every state should border conditions allow us to," Cricket Australia's Head of Big Bash Leagues, Alistair Dobson, said.

"We are working through scenarios for the remaining 35 regular season matches and Finals series to be played in the New Year with our clubs, broadcasters, partners and governments. An announcement on these venues will be made in the coming weeks. "
